Hermaphroditus is the child of Hermes and Aphrodite. He was born as a male and was seen as incredibly handsome. The nymph Salmacis fell in love with him and prayed to the Gods to be joined forever with Hermaphroditus. The Gods responded by merging them physically. Hermaphroditus is depicted in art as a female form with male genitalia. Male pronouns are used to refer to him. He represents androgyny and effeminacy. The ancient Greek writer Theophrastus indicates that he represents the union of marriage as well.
